New Fast Antivirus and anti-spyware engine
This is the same engine as avast! antivirus 6 Pro. The state of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.
Real time anti-rootkit protection built-in
Rootkits are programs that install on your computer while keeping themselves and their activities hidden to remain invisible to the user. Unique "on access" technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.
Based on the class-leading GMER technology, avast! can now scan your live system for rootkit infections; no boots disks are required. If a rootkit is discovered, it is initially disabled and then if it can be safely removed without affecting the performance of the computer, it is removed. avast! antivirus includes a virus database which can be automatically updated to provide continuous protection against rootkits.
Silent background firewall
The silent firewall enables you to control incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer. Protection is based on heuristic and behavioral analysis, and a white list of known safe applications. There are three network settings which can be changed depending on the type of connection.
Antispam
New comprehensive SPAM and fraudulent message filter. It works as a plug-in to MS Outlook and a generic POP3/IMAP4 proxy for other email clients.

Avast! Internet Security 6 is a complete online security package that includes a powerful antivirus scanning engine, a high quality firewall and online anti-spam protection. An Avast Internet security review of threat protection rated its ability to prevent intrusion as one of the highest. This is backed up with full sandboxing and virtualization of the browser when you are online to keep you safe from malicious software. The Firewall has some very well designed intelligent stealth features where it creates security rules based on location and prior patterns of access, hiding your computer's ports against external connections. With an intelligent management system, Avast Internet Security download updates are regularly installed without needing user attention.
avast Internet Security - Things We Didn't Like
Some of the malware it can detect it does not remove, this is disappointing for a commercial anti-malware package. Ultimately it is not as good as a number of competing antivirus products at virus detection and anti-spam filtering. Parts of the protection don't appear to be very effective with malware circumventing the sandboxing and the spam filter missing a lot of spam. It also lacks privacy and parental locks to make online browsing safer for families, a feature many competing packages possess.
