It's easy to overlook basic slow computer solutions and turn to more complex, or expensive, fixes, but here are some simple, easy things that can increase PC speed.
Even the most basic tasks can become a struggle when dealing with a slow computer, and finding a solution can be just as hard. A lot of time could be spent trying to find out what is causing the problem, but in many cases there is more than one factor involved in PC speed.
While there are not any definitives ways to solve all the problems that slow down a PC, there are some easy slow computer solutions that anyone can try. The three discussed here should make a difference to speed on most slow PC's.
Clean Out The Hard Drive
The more we use our PC, the more information gets stored on the hard drive. This means that the computer memory is often taken up with all kinds of data and programs which may not be needed any more, which also affects the processor and speed of the computer.
Deleting these files or uninstalling programs can make a huge difference in speed, especially if it has not been cleaned out for a while. For people who do not find many files that can be deleted, but are still using a lot of the memory, it is worthwhile considering an external storage or backup option, such as an online data backup service that offers individual file selection without syncing data between the cloud and the computer.
Disk Defragmentation
Disk defragmentation is a process that works to optimize the file storage on a PC running a Microsoft Windows operating system. Unfortunately it can be time-consuming and actually slow down the PC while it is running, which is why some people do not make the most of this feature. The less often defragmentation is done, the greater the chance of a slow PC, as this article from HowStuffWorks explains.
Most versions of Windows now offer an automatic defragmentation schedule, but if that is switched off, or timed for when the computer is not turned on, defragmentation will not happen. Finding a way to regularly perform a defragmentation, whether manually or using the auto-schedule option, will improve the overall performance of a PC and help to maintain PC speed.
Easy Slow Computer Solutions With Software
There is a range of software on the market for people who are struggling with a slow PC. From registry cleaners and optimizers like the free CCleaner to the multi-functional programs like Diskeeper Home and Norton 360, most speed problems can be reduced or fixed with the right kind of software.
But when it comes to investing in paid software like those mentioned above, it can be good to have some idea of what problems are affecting the speed of your PC. A registry cleaner, for example, will only work well if there are actual problems in the registry, but if the actual problem is spyware then a specific program to remove spyware, such as SPYWAREfighter Pro or Spyware Doctor would make more of a difference.
Reducing the problems that can cause a slow computer will make things much easier on you and your PC, while helping you understand how to get a faster computer. Using one or more of these solutions can help increase speed simply and, in many cases, without costing you much time or money.
