Upgrading from versions 8 or 9 of NaturallySpeaking Preferred or Standard?
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred offers unprecedented speech recognition with unrivaled accuracy levels: up to 20% fewer speech recognition errors out of the box than Version 9, and about half the amount of errors that the product delivered just five years ago. Users gain the added benefit of avoiding spelling errors and typing mistakes. In fact, the product actually learns from corrections over time.
Works with the applications users already have
Dictate directly into Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook Express and most other Microsoft Office applications running on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Vista. Dragon also supports popular programs such as Corel WordPerfect, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and AOL. Navigate the desktop by voice: launch or switch applications, save or print documents, and more - even control menus and dialog boxes.
Create and edit documents and spreadsheets by voice
Users can easily create documents and spreadsheets, or edit existing ones, simply by speaking. Add custom words, such as proper names, to the system's vocabulary or create commands, such as "insert signature," so that pre-set text and images will automatically appear in email and documents. Plus, Dragon enables easy correction and proofing: with the "play back" feature, users can listen to their dictation while Dragon highlights
the corresponding text on the screen for easy proofreading.
Quick Voice Formatting commands allow users to issue a single voice command, such as "Bold Quick Voice Formatting," to make formatting and deleting text faster than ever. In addition, the extensive set of Natural Language Commands mean users don't have to memorize complex instructions. In Microsoft Word, for example, a user can say, "make that bigger," and the font size increases instantly.
Dragon 10 introduces new graphical icons to enhance the DragonBar user interface, making the product even easier to use!
Send email, INSTANT MESSAGES and surf the Web - all by voice
Users can browse the Internet with ease: search the Web, access information and navigate Web pages, simply by speaking URLs and links.
Dragon Voice Shortcuts to perform tasks faster than everNEW Dragon Voice Shortcuts for Web Search make searching the Web faster and easier. A user says a command containing his desired search words, such as "Search the Web for financial management resources," or "Search maps for Italian restaurants in Burlington,
Massachusetts," and Dragon 10 will use the default search engine and Web browser to enter his dictated term(s) in the search field and return the results. A user may also search specific sites or search the Web for a specific type of information using commands such as "Search Wikipedia for George Washington Carver," or "Search eBay for Bluetooth headsets." Sites supported by Dragon Voice Shortcuts include Google, Yahoo, eBay, Wikipedia, YouTube and more.
Dragon Voice Shortcuts for Desktop Search introduce commands to search the computer as directly as the Web, by dictating the word(s) to find documents, emails and Web browsing history. For example, a user can say, "Search computer for launch plans," and Dragon will complete the search using Google Desktop or Windows Vista desktop search. In addition, commands such as, "Find an email about the Robinson report" directly open the top email containing the dictated keywords. Searching the computer has never been faster - or easier.
Dictate into a handheld recorder for later transcription Be productive on the go. Users can dictate into any Nuance-certified digital recorder when they're away from the office for automatic transcription when it is synched with a PC.

Finally, Voice Recognition that Works
I tried earlier versions of speech recognition software and was very disappointed. This is the first program I have been able to use successfully. The more you use it, the more it seems to learn from your writing style. Though it is very easy to use out of the box, it requires a short learning curve. The good news is that you can learn as you go. It is certainly one of the top productivity tools that I have used in recent memory. In fact, I have used it to write/speak this review.

Amazing!
Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 is amazing, I recently started freelance writing, but my biggest draw back is that my typing skills leave something to be desired. This program is allowing even the typing challenged people like me to edit text or answer emails in record time. It allows you to create and edit in almost any Mircosoft Excel and wordperfect program. I couldn't believe how easy it was. I didn't have to go through page after page of script before I could start using this software. I give this software a 4 out of 5

Best in the Field
I find the Dragon NaturallySpeaking suite of speech recognition software to be the best in the field. That is of course, not to say that it is error-free - significant improvements have to be made, but given that perfect speech recognition remains something of science fiction novels, NaturallySpeaking is the leader amongst all such software. I am a Windows Vista user. I can say that the Vista speech recognition in-built is alot poorer than NaturallySpeaking's. For one, you require a more high-quality microphone for Vista's in-built software than for NaturallySpeaking. Second, the in-built engine gets alot of words wrong that it is simply inefficient to use - NaturallySpeaking resolves these fundamental problems nicely, it really does a good job of recognizing dictation. I found Nuance's specific library catered to Southeast Asian speakers, along with Australian and Indian English speakers a very thoughtful move. Dictation is made simpler. You just need to speak slower and clearer compared to speaking with the avergae person when you talk to NaturallySpeaking with the correct language setting. Many other such software assume an American or British English-speaking audience - as such, if a non-native speaker may use them, they also must don the correct accents for the software to work to satisfactory standards. Indeed, Dragon NaturallySpeaking lets you speak naturally - it gets words wrong, of course, but a user-friendly interface makes it easy to correct, and a quick adaptation system makes such errors, once corrected, near-impossible to re-commit as it adjusts to your speaking style in less than 24 hours of your first use.

Great for Busy Newbies
If you're new to speech recognition software, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 is a great place to start. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is already known for its high-accuracy when it comes to transcribing, and version 9 is no exception: after trying it out myself, I only had to correct a few errors, and the approximately 10% error rate I calculated could be chalked up to a cheap microphone and background noise. What was more surprising than its accuracy was that I didn't have to "teach" this program to recognize my voice: it was just install and go, making it perfect for the user who is unfamiliar with the technology.
The preferred box comes with one big advantage over the standard edition: an Autotranscribe folder allows you to record speech from a portable device (including, exclusive to the preferred package, Bluetooth) and have NaturallySpeaking transcribe it automatically, meaning you don't even have to be at your PC if you want to jot down some notes. Overall, the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred Box is a vast improvement over its predecessors, but it only packs a real punch if you find yourself needing to write on the go. Four and a half stars out of five.

Dragon Naturally Speaking makes typing a thing of the past. It beats my typing speed and punches out a WHOPPING 155 WORDS PER MINUTE! Its transcribing abilities are remarkably accurate and the program is so versatile, it can run without being configured, separating this product from its many competitors. In fact, only a few moments after installing it, I was able to start "typing" an essay using polysyllabic words which the program molded nicely into clear type on Microsoft Office Word.
The program is user friendly and requires little to no muddling with voice configuration files and can be viewed as a multifunctinal bar or as a system tray icon. This is a nice feature if you value your screen space. The program has many features which enhance its speech recognition capabilities by allowing you to correct it quickly via numeric pad when it makes a mistake and adding words to its already extensive vocabulary. You can also ask it to substitute certain words you say with preferred replacements. This is a great feature if you want to access things such as web page URLs quickly. Using a USB microphone ($20), the program had no trouble at all understanding what I was saying. With a low end microphone ($5) it had a little trouble, but within minutes I was able to calibrate the program so that it could filter out the background noise. Again, this was not a tedious correction process. The program simply asked me to read my choice of a few paragraphs, and it was ready to roll.
Definitely a 5 out of 5. Get it now. Don't waste you life typing up reports :) .

Highly Satisfied! Five star rating. I recently purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 9 because as a stay-at-home mom with a new baby I found I had much more time for writing, but seldom an available hand to do it with. My dad, who's in the software development business, was excited to inform me of the recent advancements in voice recognition software, and especially of this version.
I admit I was skeptical of its claim for 99% accuracy and very little training, but I am completely satisfied with its performance. The initial training took no more than five minutes time, the instructions were simple and almost intuitive, and I was writing fluently in no time. It made a few more mistakes at first, but every time I use it becomes more accurate by learning as I correct its mistakes. After four or five uses it was typing my words with more accuracy than I would have.

If you do a lot of writing this is worth the cost The average person speaks about three times as fast as the average person types. With Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred 9 I can create almost any windows based document as fast as I can speak. Even better, Dragon doesn't make spelling errors and is highly accurate. I wish I had this program when I had those long essays to write in high school and college.
I would recommend this for almost anyone that frequently uses a windows based word processor. I give this product 4 out of 5 stars, the only issue I have with it is that older video cards may experience some difficulty with the program and when background noise is a problem it can interfere with the program.

Four out of Five stars - excellent product! Using Dragon is easy to understand, and after minimal "teaching" time (so it understood my speech patterns) I was up and talking - while Dragon was doing all of the work!
Kudos on a wonderful, easy-to-use product, thank-you!

I'm using it right now! I'm a skeptical woman, so, for me, purchasing software is often difficult, but not this time. I bought it, and I'm thrilled.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 9 speech recognition software includes video tutorials, which make learning to use this product both simple, and efficient. Training's a breeze too. Using only my voice, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 9 not only types my text, it also provides me the ability to bold, backspace, italicize, insert, begin a new paragraph, a new line, edit and so much more, and it's quite accurate too.
Naturally Speaking Preferred 9 provides me a uniquely different, pleasurable, interactive typing experience. Additionally, Rather than wasting time correcting and formatting, I find myself having more time to produce, proof, and edit my work. More time means more productivity, which means more income and more free time. Now, that's what I need from my software. I highly recommend Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred. 5/5 Stars
