Norton Antivirus is a leading antivirus application, now available for Mac OS X. Version 11 of Norton Antivirus offers a range of improvements from previous editions, including a slick and streamlined interface, a vastly improved virus scanning engine, and several Mac-only software enhancements.
A true juggernaut amongst antivirus developers, Norton are one of the most respected and popular developers amongst PC users. While less demanding in terms of antivirus applications, Mac users will no doubt enjoy the range of new functions available in Norton Antivirus 11. The brand new interface offers enhanced usability and design, allowing users to control and secure their Mac more easily than before.
In addition to the enhanced interface, Norton Antivirus 11 has been built from the ground up with a brand new scanning engine. Designed to improve virus detection and eliminate 'false positive' detections, and provides a greater level of detail on viruses and malicious software which is found.
Designed to provide ongoing protection, Norton Antivirus 11 is an always-on background application, running the entire time that the users' Mac is operational. While this may be a concern for low-spec Mac users, Norton have designed Antivirus 11 to run smoothly in the background, using a very small amount of system resources.
However, despite the slim installation and modest system resource usage, Norton Antivirus 11's scanning performance is not on par with competing products. Scanning is significantly slower than expected, with some users experiencing up to 5 hours for initial scanning on a near-new Mac. While scan times undoubtedly lower with frequency, this may put off users that are looking for a low-commitment antivirus application.
As an all-round antivirus application, Norton Antivirus 11 holds up well next to its Mac OS X rivals. Despite slow scanning, system performance is strong and virus detection is as sharp as ever. For Mac antivirus protection, Norton Antivirus 11 is worth the time.
