Norton Internet Security 2010 leverages a new model of security, codenamed Quorum, to attain unmatched detection of new malware and advance far beyond traditional signature and behavior-based detection. Specifically, Quorum takes the greatest weapon cyber criminals have in their arsenal - their ability to generate unique pieces of malware at an alarming rate - and turns that very weapon against them.

Following on the success of the Norton 2009 release, Symantec has made an ongoing commitment to delivering security products that are fast and light. The Norton 2010 products have maintained an eye on performance, in spite of adding significant new protection technology to the release.

  • Fast install - Norton Internet Security 2010 installs in about a minute
  • Least working memory usage - Norton Internet Security 2010 uses just over 10MB
  • Fastest scan - Norton Internet Security 2010 scans in only 61 seconds on a Hard Disk Drive and in only 31 seconds on an Solid State Drive.

With Quorum, the very uniqueness of a file and its attributes is what helps us identify it as new malware. More than three years in the making, Quorum tracks files and applications and dozens of their attributes such as their age, download source, digital signature, and prevalence. These attributes are then combined using complex algorithms to determine a reputation. As a file is distributed across the Internet and these attributes change, Quorum updates the reputation of the file. This reputation is especially important when a file is new, likely to be a threat, and traditional defenses are not likely to detect it.

The Norton Insight family of technologies in the new 2010 products uses extensive online intelligence systems to proactively protect the PC and keep users informed of the security and performance impact of files and applications that they encounter in their everyday online experience.

Norton Download Insight - Uses extensive online intelligence systems leveraging reputation to proactively protect your PC. Analyzes and reports on the safety of new files and applications before users install and run them.

Norton System Insight - Provides features and easy-to-understand system information to help keep PCs performing at top speed. Automatic and on-demand application optimization rejuvenates application performance. Provides a view of recent events on the computer, providing the information required to research and analyze PC issues. Performance graphs help pinpoint what's causing a computer to slow down.

Norton Threat Insight - Provides details on threats that have been detected on your PC - including useful information on where it came from (the URL) and when it was initially encountered.

Norton Insight Network - Leverages a cloud-based approach unique to Symantec. Based on the Quorum technology, it takes cloud-based security beyond traditional blacklists and whitelists. It uses a statistical analysis of file attributes based on billions of scans on millions of computers to identify the trust level of a file. This way Norton can identify files to be trustworthy or untrustworthy that would otherwise fall into the grey area of the unknown with only traditional security methods.

SONAR 2 - Sophisticated second-generation behavioral security technology that detects entirely new threats based on their suspicious actions, without the need for traditional fingerprints. Leverages data from the reputation cloud, firewall, network communications (IPS), and file attributes such as location on the PC, origin information, etc., to decide when to detect a program as a threat.

New Anti-spam - Powerful Enterprise-grade spam blocking engine helps keep you clear of unwanted email and safe from email-based scams and infections. 20% more effective than the previous engine and requires no training.

Norton Safe Web - Website rating service that annotates Google, Yahoo! and Live.com search results with site safety ratings to warn users about sites that may pose a danger to them. It also includes ecommerce safety ratings to help users make safer online shopping decisions.

OnlineFamily.Norton - Norton Internet Security 2010 users can opt to try a subscription to OnlineFamily.Norton, a new Web-based service that keeps parents in the loop on their kids online lives and fosters communication about what's appropriate and inappropriate behavior on the Internet.

Working well with Vista
Just downloaded and installed this last night on my new Vista PC (sweet Dell laptop I got for college this year). Smooth install and seems to have a snappier feel than previous versions so far.

Norton Internet Security Suite 2008 - 3PCs
When More Looks Like less I recently upgraded to Norton's 2008 version. Installation was far from easy. Old file versions needed deleting before new ones would work, and the key I got online did not work. On the plus side, Norton online support was first class, and got me up and running. Norton needs to improve its online documentation and include a few simple explanations. Once installed, my initial impression of the new version was that it didn't have as many easy to see features as the older version. Having been running it for a few days, however, it is clear that the protection is wider and deeper, but that many more settings are automated, making life easier. One thing the 2008 version does not do is to put my important mail in the Junk folder which for me is a big improvement. I never could figure out how the 2006 algorithm worked.

Norton Internet Security Suite 2008 - 3PCs

Norton does it Again Norton Internet Security 2008 is another great product from the computer security giant. Norton Internet Security just keeps getting better with every release and 2008 is no different. I find that the Norton security software is simple to use and protects against every known attack. I really like the idea that my information is safe from malicious software that would steal my data and quite possibly my identity. The anti-phishing utility is the most comprehensive on the market.

I definitely recommend using Norton Internet Security 2008 for your data protection needs. Norton gets a big 5 out of 5 stars from me.

Norton Internet Security Suite 2008 - 3PCs
The software wizards at Symantec have outdone themselves and their competition this time! With added security features, an easy to use graphics interface, and a program optimized for performance, security, and minimum memory usage. Norton Internet Security 2008 is by far the best all around online protection available. The added bonus of a three user license rounds up to instant savings and is just icing on the cake. The installation was smooth and seamless. I installed the software on three machines with various cpu / memory configurations, from a 1ghz computer with 384mb of pc133 ram to a 3.2ghz computer with 1gb of pc4200 ram all running windows XP sp2. Each machine was first tested with a similar Internet Security Suite and baseline memory performance tests were recorded. The computers were run through a barrage of tests to measure scan times, boot times etc. I then removed the baseline programs and installed Norton Internet Security 2008 on each machine. After the installation completed on each machine the first thing that I noticed was the decrease in boot time on all three. After letting the machines run a while I checked the memory usage compared to the baselines. On all three machines there was a dramatic improvement, with the 3.2ghz machine using 28mb less memory than the baseline! The Symantec tests boasted of a 69% improvement in memory usage and 20% faster boot times. The results that I achieved with my shop tests verified the data. With the added security features, anti-spyware, and enhanced performance this is easily the best one yet!

Norton Internet Security 2008
Easy for Newbies I love the no-nonsense front end user dialog screens with this system. Easy to install, easy to use, and more importantly easy to understand (and therefore fix) if something does go array. Live upgrades are permissible on a daily basis and simple to run. Virus notifications come with detailed links on definition, assessed risk to your pc, and comprehensive instructions on where to go and how to remove the offending little blighter/s. That said venturing into the ms-dos editor did leave me slightly trembly and cold. But since I couldn't find the run=(Trojan name) assumed all was well and quickly retreated to safer ground. I did a second scan which came back clean - happy proof that somehow I had managed to deal with the virus threat successfully. Rate: 4/5

Norton Internet Security 2008

Again, I'm Stuck The Norton family seems to be making some of us juggle between positive and "I don't know" opinions. It didn't spark any angry rants (we all know what happens when we trust programs to give us the proper Internet security that we hope for), and yet it didn't give me the idea that it wasn't trying to put my whole computer on lock down.

I'm going to have to Norton Internet Security 2008 a 3.5 rating.

Norton Internet Security 2008

Sparkling performance, not the easiest installation. Having downloaded and installed this package the other night I have to say the interface is an improvement on the older version. With new graphics and a large box on the tool-bar informing me whether my virus definitions are up to date, it provides ample Firewall protection, Parental Guidance and Virus cover. The interface is straightforward and doesn't take too much knowledge to use.

Having purchased Norton for all our P.C.'s over the last five years I have no doubt this version will work as well as the previous builds. The only downside was that the package would not load unless the older version of Norton Security was uninstalled first. This involved changing the installation in Windows 'add/remove programs' and then removing the older software from the P.C. This still did not solve the problem, however, as the installer kept telling me a version of Norton Security was still installed on the system. I finally had to navigate to the program folder and rename it before the new version would install. On the whole, I think the package is worthwhile but it could pose problems for any users without the computer knowledge to install it correctly. Rating 4 out of 5 (for the installation problems).

Norton Internet Security 2008

Norton Insecurity

The good news about this product: it does keep your computer secure. So secure that no nasty internet will interfere with it. Figuring out how to allow normal web browsing without significant features being identified as threats is enough of a chore. Attempting to use online games with Norton installed is a nightmare. Thankfully, the 2008 version of Norton Internet Security is easier to uninstall than previous versions.

I recommend this program for those who are paranoid about security, don't have access to skilled professionals to configure a more elegant security apparatus, and don't plan to use the internet for anything more complicated than web-based email. Good luck getting your laptop to connect to the wireless network at the airport, though; for me, Norton continually identified wireless network routers as worm programs attempting to invade my system.
