TaxCut 2008: Which Version Do I Choose?

As if it weren't confusing enough choosing from so many different yet similar tax preparation software programs, most of these companies also offer various versions of their respective programs. For instance, H&R Block offers taxpayers no less than three premium alternatives along with a home and business edition of its best-selling TaxCut program. Which one is right for you? Do you really need the business edition if you operate a business from your home?

TaxCut 2008 Premium or for Mac.

If your state has a separate income tax, you'll have to shell out extra for an upgrade. If you would like to get your tax return faster through e-filing your taxes, you'll have to pay for an upgrade. If you also want to e-file your state return, you'll have to pay more. In other words, the basic version of TaxCut Premium is for those without the burden of a state income tax and don't mind waiting for the mail to bring them their government check.

TaxCut 2008 Premium + State or for Mac.

All versions of TaxCut Premium are easy to use and offer help with customized deductions and business expenses. This version, however, includes the separate program Deduction Pro to lend further assistance in keeping track of your deductible expenses as well as discovering new ways to save money. You also get one free session with an actual human tax advisor by purchasing the full package. Even if you don't have a state income tax, this is the best value for the average taxpayer.

TaxCut 2008 Home and Business

If you are running a home business, you probably don't really need to upgrade to this, since the deluxe Premium package already contains forms and advice on home business deductions. The TaxCut Home & Business program is ideally designed for business tax needs associated with corporations, limited partnerships, or even non-profit charities. Unless your business has to worry about things like filing payroll taxes and other corporate tax needs, TaxCut Premium is all you will need to do both your personal and business tax preparation.
