Making Your Old Computer New Again

A SoftHelp How To

When you bought your computer it was top of the line, the fastest machine available for commercial use, and the envy of all your friends. Over time though, its lightning quick movements have slowed, so much so that one day you find yourself wondering "How much did I pay for this piece of junk?"

You can relax though; it's not that the computer is bad; it's that it has been flooded with junk. Old emails, copies of photos, spyware, all seriously hamper the performance of your computer. By following these easy steps, you can make your computer young again.

  1. The program SpeedUpMyPC 3 is amazing, touching on every part of your computer to remove disk clutter and optimize settings. For one click optimization, Speed Up My PC is the way to go.
  2. Go through your PC deleting old and redundant files. Candidates for this are:

· Your email accounts: Saving thousands of sent and received emails will slow your system down significantly

· Your media folders: Songs and photos can each be a couple of megabytes, while videos can be around 30 or 40 MB. Purging what you no longer need will free up a lot of disk space

· Your documents: Although these files are small, many people have hundreds of documents. Delete the ones you'll never need again..

  1. Get rid of spyware! Spyware completely infiltrates your system and uses tons of memory on tasks you don't even want done. Programs like Spyware Doctor 5.0 are great for optimization.
  2. Windows itself can help, with it's built in Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmentation utilities. (Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmentation can be found under Accessories | System Tools) Running both of these could take a while, but will significantly speed up your computer.
  3. Clean your registry. Although you can do it yourself, we recommend using a program like Desktop Mechanic 2.0 to ensure that you don't delete important files necessary to your computer's operation.
