Let’s face it: filing a final income tax return is never fun. In the back of your mind you are always thinking about how much you paid throughout the year and whether or not you will owe more.

Along with actually paying your taxes, you may also have to spend a lot of money on the preparation of your return. Or do you? There are many “tax time bargains” that you can take advantage of. Here are two ways to save on the cost of filing your return:

Use a coupon. As tax season gets closer and closer, major tax software publishers begin to jockey for position in hopes of attracting a large number of customers. For this reason, you may be able to find a coupon and/or discount code. For example, TurboTax coupons are very common – especially from the months of January through March.
Rely on free tax software. If you have a simple return that does not require much outside assistance you may be able to use free tax software. Two of the best programs include: TurboTax Online Federal and H&R Block Home Online.

Is your income tax situation more complicated? In this case, you may not be able to use free software. But before you pay, make sure you consider these free applications – hopefully one of them will work for you. Tax software publishers like TurboTax often have more than one special available, so even if you can not get a TurboTax coupon, there should be affordable alternatives.

It is bad enough that you have to pay taxes, but you should not have to overpay for tax preparation. To avoid this, take advantage of coupons and consider using free tax software.
