Mac users have for years bemoaned the general lack of finance and billing software translated into their language. The intuitive interfaces, organizational efficiency and general ease of use expected from Mac software has, for many, never quite permeated the finance and billing market. However, with Intuit's release of QuickBooks 2010 for Mac, the moaning is quickly turning to excitement.

Obviously, Intuit would have been crazy to abandon the formula that has made their software a market leader in recent years. We can assure you that QuickBook's core ability to organize your finances, track money going in and out through sales, customer payments and purchase orders, and spot areas where you can save or grow has remained constant.

However, moving into the world of Mac has wrought some interesting and mostly effective changes on the software for 2010. Most of these are focused on interfacing, with a new Home Page, Report Centre and Company Snap Shot layout that works in single click simplicity to take you respectively through your top concerns such as invoices, automatically grouped client details and overviews of your business strengths and weaknesses.

Efficiency, overall, is one of the big improvements we found in the Mac version of QuickBooks 2010 - setting up a new business profile in the program, for instance, now taking about two steps compared to the 20-100 steps required in previous versions.

Tying into Mac apps, the Apps Centre in QuickBooks 2010 has a solid range of applications that help track marketing campaigns and sales leads so that you keep in step with the competition and maximize profits.

Whilst Mac users have been understandably excited about these Mac-specific developments, the software has come under a degree of fire for its laboured install process, occasional data confusion, and the M.I.A. tech-support that would otherwise help fix such problems. The Mac innovations have obviously come at the price of some basic usability processes, but for many, the smooth intuitive navigation will be enough to help gloss over those concerns.

For the small business owner and entrepreneur looking to make the financial side of business easier and more accurate, QuickBooks will say the 2010 software is designed just for you. Invoicing, billing, expenses, networking and self-appraising are all particularly understandable and navigable with the one-click Mac layout, as you would expect from a trusted software line serious about becoming Mac-friendly.

QuickBooks 2010 for Mac: What We Liked

Software.com Labs singled out the key features to be watching for in Quickbooks 2010 for Mac.

  • Interfaces- QuickBooks most important functions are shaved down into one or two-click, well laid-out processes for efficiency and less confusion. For the new user, this is key to getting your head around the core of your financial details.
  • Customizable - access the Mac system preferences you're used to using through the built-in search box, share data with Windows users (such as your accountant).
  • Insight - Not only is navigation insightful, the tools supplied by the program gave us the right information to make decisions: data from prior QuickBooks, business reports, bill and inventory trackers.
  • First-time friendly - step-by-step tutorials, familiar invoice/paycheck etc. templates for entering information, easy upgrades.

QuickBooks 2010 for Mac: What We Didn't Like

Macs are renowned for their spatial organization and navigation. Processing, however, suffers as a result.

  • A complicated install process.
  • Some data accuracy issues when converting from Windows into the program (however, there are online instructions on how to rectify these).
  • There have been some complaints that the jazzed up Mac interfaces are unprofessional.

Currently enjoying an 87% market share, the QuickBooks line by Intuit has forged a reputable place for itself amongst small businesses in need of simple and efficient accounting software. The latest edition for Mac computers, Quickbooks 2010, gives you a centralized platform to organize your finances, track your money, and easily manage your business.

With a core client base of small business owners with no formal account training, the Quickbooks 2010 software for Mac focuses on ease of use in all of its key functions:

  • Creating invoices, paying bills, and managing expenses.
  • Gaining insight into your business with over 100 reports.
  • Accessing key data fast with Customer and Vendor Centers.

QuickBooks 2010 for Mac Features

Catering the software towards the smooth interfaces, usability and organizational efficiency expected by Mac users, Quickbooks 2010 for Mac has taken heed of customer feedback when designing its latest features:

  • Home Page that shows how business tasks fit together with one-click access to key tasks.
  • Customer, Vendor, Transaction and Report Centers that organize respective data into single-page views for easier access and action.
  • Company Snapshot tool that gives a real-time macro view of a business's financial picture.

For this year's release, QuickBooks for Mac has made a number of innovations to their previous software to make your accounting easier and more efficient:

  • New user interface - designed with one-click access to commonly used tasks such as creating estimates or invoices, helping you find what you need fast.
  • Customizable Company Snapshot - create a personalized overview of your business and see what's most important to you (year-over-year expense and income comparisons, expense and income breakdowns, top customers by sales and more).
  • New tools - Customer, Vendor, and Transaction Centers to consolidate key information (contact information, complete transaction histories) onto a single screen.
  • New Report Centre - over 100 customizable reports in the Report Center and quickly see where you're making and spending money.

All this information - invoices, estimates, purchase orders, reports - are then easily exported in one-click into a PDF file for easy circulation. This process is helped by the ability to sync your contacts with Address Book and back up files to your MobileMe account, or share your data with your accountant or other Windows-based users.

As you would expect, having been designed from the ground up by Mac engineers and built for Mac OS X (v 10.5.7, 10.6, or later), QuickBooks for Mac looks and works like a Mac, with familiar printing, preferences, and customization.
