QuickBooks accounting software has always targeted the small to medium business owner and looked to make the management of gritty financial details easier and more professional. It has founded itself on giving customers the information and layout the accountants use, made simpler.

When we looked at the Premier edition, we expected it to do this more effectively than any of the other QuickBooks releases this year or previously, and we were not disappointed. Its innovations saved us time, made more navigational sense and gave us freedom in the customization process.

Apart from the fact that the Premier edition includes 6 industry-specific versions of the software in one package, tailoring the features and tools to suit the contractor, general business owner, manufacturer & wholesale, non-profit business, consultant or retail owner, we found it improved the overall effectiveness of previous innovations to the QuickBooks Pro 2010 edition or last year's Premier.

It cut down the time used in these processes by half, improving the layout and increasing its processing power. The table format, for example, in the Add/Edit Multiple Data Entries tool, makes direct importation of spreadsheets and other custom information from Excel quicker, and adds the ability to copy changes made to one customer list, for example, and paste the changes into a number of other lists.

By taking the QuickBooks Premier 2010 software online, Intuit have improved the overall access of the program and made it more customizable. We were able to access all our critical data wherever we were (which meant our accountant could too), and benefited from the programs automatic update search. QuickBooks Apps gave us even more add-on programs to customize the accounting process.

QuickBooks Premier also supplies a variety of background designs for your transaction forms, which you can edit individually or as a group, applying a design to more than one document. We particularly liked the way in which the 2010 Premier version let us scan documents directly into the program through Document Manager and attach them to the relevant record, an invoice, a purchase order etc., cleaning up our office clutter.

Overall, the testing at Software.com Labs gave us time to consider the number of minor improvements that contributed to far more functional, powerful program. It contains many of the same innovations of the 2010 Pro software, but offers enough tweaks to make the use of these tools worth the upgrade.

QuickBooks Premier 2010: What We Liked

Software.com Labs singled out the key features to be watching for in Quickbooks Premier 2010.

• Efficiency - QuickBooks Premier 2010 has significantly faster processing than its predecessors, both in terms of crunching data into tables and visuals, and in boot up time - Express Install and set-up Wizard get you into the action quicker than before.
• Customizable - It is now possible to take custom data from excel and bring it straight into the software, meaning you have complete control of layout, content and emphasis. Previously static screens such as the Company Snapshot are editable in the Premier edition, and you are offered over 135 professional report and document templates to play around with and set the right design.
• Specificity - The program is really 6 editions in one. Depending on your line of work, QuickBooks Premier has a tailored structure to suit the specific needs of different industries.
• First-time friendly - step-by-step tutorials, familiar templates for entering information (such as invoices and paychecks), and easy upgrades.

QuickBooks Premier 2010: What We Didn't Like

This is the premier installment of the QuickBooks software. As such, more is always expected and we picked out the few small areas where Premier could still make progress.

• It is a costly investment, but for the professional accounting ability it provides, a one-time layout sure beats repeated consultant expenses.
• Some annoying habits such as subscription pop-ups.

Intuit do offer online support via monthly and yearly support plans that provide backup services, data recovery, 24/7 contact with the Intuit support team amongst other useful links.
