ResumeMaker Professional has been the top selling software package for resumes for ten years. Described as a "blockbuster" by the New York Times, this latest version also includes powerful job hunting tools and interview preparation tutorials, although its interface could be more user friendly.

By using the familiar wizard interface, which enables easy assembly and formatting of information, both recent entrants into the job market and more experienced applicants can compose a professional resume. ResumeMaker Professional 15.0 uses customized templates which are professionally designed to match particular career situations, rather than one-size-fits-all themes.

When the Software.com Labs tested this latest release, we found that formatting of colors, margins, and fonts required some getting used to, but once the program's internal logic was understood, it was one-click simple. The one or two page autofit was the same although second-page headers are automatic.

A more appropriate name for this program might be JobFinder Professional. In addition to resume drafting, ResumeMaker Professional 15.0 also includes online search tools that comb every major career website as well as 50,000 corporate sites and 20 million companies, sorting by industry, location, and career path, a time-saving tool that alone is worth the price. It also includes an email merge tool that can broadcast a prepared resume and cover letter to as many as 90 selected sites.

There are also tutorials to prepare job hunters for live interviews, with salary negotiating tips, career advice, and taped interviews with over 500 practice questions, as well as the answers.

• Extensive thesaurus containing appropriate words and phrases pertaining to chosen careers

ResumeMaker Professional: What We Didn't Like

• Understanding how this program thinks took some experimentation and time, although the results proved worth the effort
• There were some formatting issues when printing or rolling over the completed resume into Microsoft Word, and some graphics simply did not translate
