Editor's Review
An all-purpose anti-spyware and security application for Mac OS X, SecureMac's MacScan 2.6 is one of the most powerful and useful security applications available for Mac users. With a focus on anti-spyware and -malware protection, MacScan 2.6 is perfect for users looking to keep their Mac machine performing smoothly and safely.
Despite lacking antivirus protection, MacScan 2.6 is one of the most comprehensive and worthwhile security investments available for Mac users. OS X has a reputation as a secure operating system - a reputation that's largely deserved - but it's still open to risks of infection from malware, spyware, and potentially dangerous trojans. MacScan 2.6, while not covering every possible security threat, provides comprehensive coverage against malicious software.
MacScan keeps watch for dangerous software and installers, with a close eye on over 8000 potentially dangerous cookies listed in its database. While MacScan isn't a seamless background application, it's very effective when used for overnight scanning and ongoing protection. Instead of running in the background, MacScan 2.6 must be launched manually - users can simply store it in their dock and leave it running at a set time every week.
Almost all modern Macs will be able to run MacScan 2.6. Compatible with both Intel and PowerPC based Macs, MacScan 2.6 will run effectively on all versions of Mac OS X from Tiger (10.4) onwards. Performance is smooth and light enough to run in the background, even on a relatively low spec aging Macbook.
While the Mac is certainly more protected from infection than a Windows PC without antivirus of anti-malware applications, it's still under considerable threat. MacScan isn't a perfect application - the lack of background scanning prevents it from being a true all-purpose security suite - but it's a large step in the right direction for Mac security. While lacking antivirus protection, this security application is still a worthwhile investment for Mac users.
MacScan 2.6: What We Liked
System requirements are very low, and even an aging Mac can run MacScan smoothly.
Few programs answer the Mac security threat, and MacScan does an effective job at preventing malicious software and cookies.
Almost all trojans, malicious applications, and unwanted advertising applications are blocked when MacScan is open.
MacScan 2.6: What We Didn't Like
A lack of always-on functions keep MacScan from being a great anti-spyware application.
While Mac users aren't at high risk for virus infections, basic antivirus support would have been a nice addition.
