Tax Software: How to use it
26 Jan
A guide to getting the best out of current tax software. View and compare prices for top titles like Intuit's TurboTax and H&R Block.
No matter which tax software you choose, it is essential to know how to use it and which features you are going to rely on the most. It does you no good to buy tax software if you don’t plan on learning how to use it efficiently and effectively.
Most programs, including those from Intuit and H&R Block, offer step by step guidance for software users. As you answer basic questions the proper information is plugged into your tax return. In other words, you are completing your return without having to answer confusing questions directly from the forms.
Of course, tax software is not magical. You need certain information if you are going to quickly complete and submit your return. This includes but is not limited to wages earned, deductions, credits, and investments. The questions that you are asked will be related to these details.
While tax software programs are full of powerful tools to make your life easier, you still have to provide accurate information if you want to submit an accurate return. Intuit, for example, offers an audit risk tool which is meant to alert you of red flags that the IRS may catch. That being said, you don’t have to succumb to this advice.
Most importantly, you should let your tax software do its job. No matter if you opted for a free version or paid for your software, it is powerful enough to help you along the way. If you follow the steps as they are outlined you should be able to submit your return with confidence.
