A swarm of AI bots descends on code reviews

AI code review tools are rapidly being adopted by the developer community. Usage of GitHub Copilot code review on public repositories more than quadrupled in Q1 ‘25 vs. the previous quarter.

Other tools are seeing a similar surge: global data from GitHub shows a notable increase in pull requests reviewed by AI bots between Q4 2024 and Q1 2025. The chart below shows the number of merged PRs per quarter reviewed by tools that are popular within our community — including CodeRabbit, GitHub Copilot, Sourcery AI, Korbit AI

The development of AI review tools has progressed quickly. In just 157 days, GitHub Copilot’s code review went from private preview (October 29, ‘24) to GA (April 4, ‘25). Google’s Gemini Code Assist for code reviews only became widely available in February of this year.

This dataset is limited to public repositories — and won’t capture reviews in private projects. But it suggests a growing role for AI in code reviews and an openness in the developer community to experiment with new AI tools.
